Dairy products – whether cream, cheese, yoghurt or ice cream – are staples of almost every household. Australian dairy company Bulla Dairy Foods in the state of Victoria is a market leader in the Australian dairy industry and has two CHP modules from MTU Onsite Energy at its Colac location, covering around 80% of the power needed for production there.
Exemplary use of energy
The two gas-driven Series 4000 gensets from MTU Onsite Energy were supplied by Penske Power Systems in Australia and installed into Bulla’s Colac plant to enable it to cover a large part of its heating and power requirements on its own. The two CHP modules are based on 12V and 16V Series 4000 L33 gas engines respectively. Gas-powered co-generation allows a continuous supply of heat and electrical power for dairy product manufacture. Since the heat and power is used simultaneously, the energy content of fuels such as natural gas is exploited at a very high rate of efficiency. For example, waste heat from the two CHP modules is harnessed and used for pasteurisation or to sterilise or purify product packaging. Overall, the two gensets deliver 2,878 kW of electrical and 3,023 kW of thermal power. "Bulla Dairy decided on this particular genset combination because it can adapt to the varying heating requirements of the production process and also facilitates optimum heat recovery management to assure continuous production," said Steve Turton, Power Generation Manager at Penske Power Systems.
