The Chinese shipyard AFAI Southern Shipyard (Panyu) Ltd. from Guangzhou is working with Dutch ship designers CoCo-Yachts B.V. on the construction of two `Coastal Cruiser 200´ fast ferries for the Shenzhen Pengxing Shipping Co. Ltd. from China. Each of the ferries is powered by two MTU Type 12V 2000 M72 engines, which can take the 40-meter vessels more than 60 kilometers (32,8 knots) per hour at full load. Scheduled for delivery this year, the fast ferries are earmarked for operation in the Pearl River Delta between Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Hong Kong and Macau where they each will carry up to 199 passengers and eight crew. MTU series 396 and 4000 engines have been powering fast ferries in Hong Kong since the 1990s.
The first ferry `Peng Xing 15´ was launched in January this year and in April her sister ‘Peng Xing 16´. The Shenzhen Pengxing company has already signed the contract for a further three fast ferries of the same type. According to their builder they are the fastest in their class. AFAI Southern Shipyard (Panyu) Ltd. are the largest manufacturers of aluminum-hull ferries in China.
